  2. End of Year Class Party

    Our End of Year Class Party will be Wednesday, June 6th. Dismissal is scheduled for 12:42 pm. The students will have brunch/recess from 10:00-10:30am. We will have a lunch party at 12:00. All families are welcome to attend. Our room parents will be contacting you with details.

  3. End of Year Kindergarten Performance

    Our End of Year Kindergarten Celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 5th at 8:15am in the auditorium. The children will be practicing and are excited to host this event! Please plan to attend our presentation. It will last approximately one hour. Each child will receive a certificate. There is no special attire required.

  4. Kinder Play Date

    Spread the word! The PTO cordially invites all incoming TK and Kindergarten parents and students to our annual Kinder Play Date. Our Play Date will be held on the kindergarten yard Sunday, June 3rd from 10:00 a.m.-12 noon. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet other Kindergarten families and find out more about PTO's involvement in our school. Stop by and make a new friend!

  5. May Awards Assembly

    Our final Awards Assembly will be held on Friday, June 1st at 8am on the big yard. If your child will be an award recipient, he/she will receive a note in his/her homework envelope on Friday, May 25th. We hope you can be there to support your child! Congratulations!

  6. Dance Recital

    Drum roll, please... Room 15 is proud to present our Class Dance Recital on Thursday, May 31st at 8:15am. The students are learning several folk dances this year that we wish to share with you. We will perform on the checkered board in the literacy garden. In preparation for this event, please have your child wear a white shirt. Boys should wear dark pants, and girls should wear an age appropriate, knee-length skirt. Please do not wear a long skirt, as we do not want anyone to trip during the performance. We hope you enjoy the show!

  7. Reptile Visit

    The kinder-kids will be having a Reptile Visit on Monday, May 21st! Each kinder-class will individually experience a hands-on visit in which they will learn about, see, pet, and even hold live, large reptiles! The presentation will also teach students to appreciate and respect all living creatures. This assembly is part of our kindergarten Life Science curriculum and ties in with conservation and Earth Day. Instead of one large presentation, each kindergarten class will attend separately, so students get a more hands-on experience. Please return your permission slips by Tuesday, May 15th. Our room parents will be contacting you with additional information. Thank you for your support in making this assembly a great experience for our kids!

  8. Farm Field Trip

    All kinder-kids will be going on a field trip on Monday, May 14th to Underwood Family Farms for hands-on farming fun! Permission slips will be sent home Friday, April 20th and are due no later than Friday, May 4th. Our educational farm tour will include a wagon ride and picking strawberries and an assortment of vegetables. Students will need to bring a reusable grocery bag to hold their strawberries and veggies. All students must ride the bus. Parents must drive separately and be responsible for paying their own admission fee of $12. There is no cap on the number of parents allowed to attend; the more, the merrier. You are welcome to make carpooling arrangements with fellow parents. All students must bring a sack lunch in a paper or plastic bag that can be recycled or thrown away. Please do not send lunch boxes, a thermos, ice packs, or other items that might get lost. Please label your child's lunch with a name. Students will not be allowed to leave with an adult to purchase a meal. Ensure your child eats breakfast in the morning, as our usual recess and lunch schedule will be modified on the day of the trip. Your child should wear comfortable shoes and a Lockhurst T-shirt if he or she owns one and apply sunblock before coming to school.

    We will honor our April award recipients at the Friday morning assembly on May 4th at 8am on the big yard. A note will be sent home in your child's homework envelope on Friday, April 27th if your child will be receiving an award. We hope you can be there to share in your child's special moment!   10. Volunteer Continental Breakfast

    A tremendous thank you goes out to each and every one of our volunteers this school year! To recognize your contribution, the staff of Lockhurst Drive Charter Elementary School cordially invites you to our annual Volunteer Event on Thursday, May 3rd from 9:00-10:30am. Enjoy good company and a bite to eat, as we say THANK YOU for all of your dedication and hard work! You are the BEST!

  11. Earth Day Kindergarten Rotations

    Our final kindergarten rotation will be held on Friday, April 20th from 8:15-10:00am. We need volunteers! Email or send the Volunteer Form (see Files to download) by 4/13 if you plan to attend, so we can divvy up all the kindergartners into small groups to rotate through our stations. We kindly request no siblings, please. We will be learning about conservation, endangered animals, recycling, and other ways to help our planet Earth. Additionally, we are requesting the following supplies be sent in no later than Wednesday, April 18th: bags of soil, packages of seeds, toilet or paper towel rolls (only the rolls - no paper), empty aluminum cans, newspaper, magazines, empty plastic bottles, and bird seed. At the end of the day, we will also have a "gently used toy swap;" please keep the item in a backpack/cubbie until then. In order to participate, your child should bring a gently used toy (board game, book, puzzle, doll, toy car...) to school to swap with one of his/her classmates. Finally, we request that all students wear GREEN!

  12. Open House

    This year's Open House will be held on Thursday, April 12th from 6-7:30pm. Students and parents are invited! This is a great opportunity for you to see your child's classwork as he/she gives you an exclusive tour of our classroom! You might also want to take a peek at other grade levels and classrooms. Prospective parents are welcome to come check out the campus and meet our outstanding staff.

  14. Spring Recess

    Spring Recess will be held March 26th through April 2nd. Have a wonderful, safe vacation with your family! School will resume on Tuesday, April 3rd.

  15. Spring Egg Hunt

    Our class will be having a Spring Egg Hunt on Friday, March 23rd from 12:15-12:35. Our room parents will be asking you to donate plastic eggs for our hunt. Eggs should be filled with a treat - stickers, coins, candy, or other fun, age-appropriate items. We will need parent volunteers to hide the eggs at 12:15, so we can begin our hunt by 12:25. We hope you can join us for a little spring fun! Dismissal is scheduled for 12:42.

  16. St. Patrick's Day

    We will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day with many fun and educational activities. Please be sure to dress your child in as much green as possible on Thursday, March 16th. We will have a class party at 2:00 to sample healthy green foods. Details coming soon from our fabulous room parents!

  17. Pi Day

    It’s time for another fun-filled Kindergarten rotation! The kinder-kids will be celebrating Pi Day on Wednesday, March 14th from 8-11am. The students will be participating in various STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities associated with π.

    Here’s how you can help:

    *Have your child dress like a scientist on Wednesday, March 14th.

    *Email me or return form by Friday, March 9th to let me know you can volunteer on Tuesday, 3/14. Bring a camera to take photographs. (No siblings, please.) Form will be sent home Fri., March 2nd or see Files to download.

    *Each class is asking for a donation of: 1 dozen eggs for our egg drop, 2-3 pies (to be served to the students at the end of the school day), 24 plates, 24 napkins, and 24 forks. Please let me know if you would be willing to purchase any of these supplies.

    *We are also requesting: empty paper towel rolls, empty toilet paper rolls, empty (small) boxes, newspaper, bubble wrap, and cotton balls for students to design egg transporting vehicles.

  19. Parent Presentations - Careers and Jobs in our Community

    Calling all parents...! Our current Social Studies unit is called Work. The students are learning about various jobs and careers in the community. We invite all parents to participate! We would love for you to sign up to come to Room 15 and talk about your job! Please respect our instructional time by being punctual and limiting your presentation to the time frame (and attention span - LOL) indicated. We look forward to hearing from you!   21. Valentine Dance Party

    Lockhurst's annual school dance will be held on Saturday, February 17th at Hale Charter Middle School's auditorium from 6:00-8:00pm. Admission is free! Children must be accompanied by their parents or guardian for the entire event. DJ Third Degree (Tim Jaffee) will host, and 5th grade will be selling food. Come see your Lockhurst buddies, and get you groove on!

  22. Class Valentine Party

    Love is in the air! Our class will celebrate Valentine's Day at 1:30 on Wednesday, February 14th. Wear Valentine colors or clothes with hearts. All valentines should be kept in student backpacks and cubbies until the end of the day. If your child chooses to bring valentines to distribute, he/she MUST bring a valentine for each student in the class. We currently have 23 total students. To avoid hurt feelings, students will not be allowed to hand out valentines only to select friends. In order to expedite valentine distribution, all valentines should only state who the valentine is FROM. DO NOT write who the valentine is for. Additionally, please send one kind of valentine only - not a certain valentine for the girls and a different kind for the boys. Our school encourages pencils, stickers, and other non-edible treats if you wish to attach an item to the valentine. If candy is attached to the valentine card, no problem! Students will be reminded that the treats may only be eaten after school. Thank you!

If your child will be receiving an award, a note was sent in his/her homework envelope on Friday, February 2nd. We hope you can be there to acknowledge your child's special achievement!   24. 100th Day of School

    The 100th day of school will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 7th! Kindergarten students are encouraged to dress like they are 100 years old. Parents are invited to volunteer for our kinder-rotations from 8:00-10:00am. If you are able to join us, please email me or return a volunteer form by Friday, February 2nd. I would greatly appreciate it if you could bring a camera/phone to take pictures of our students, so I can be sure to include them in our class memory book.   25. National School Choice Week

    All students and staff are invited to wear yellow scarves on Friday, January 26th in honor of National School Choice Week. Say it loud and proud that Lockhurst is your school of choice! Wear your Lockhurst T-shirt and a yellow scarf/clothing to show your Lion Pride!

  26. School Tours

    Tell a friend! Our Lockhurst school tours will be held on the following Fridays from 8:30-9:30am: January 19th, February 9th, and March 2nd. Tours are held for prospective parents and any families interested in applying for charter enrollment for Fall 2018. Come learn more about Lockhurst - a Gold Ribbon School, California Distinguished School, and School for Advanced Studies!

    Our class Holiday Potluck is scheduled for Friday, December 15th at 12:00pm, with dismissal to follow at 12:42. Please plan to bring a cultural dish or a family favorite. If your family loves it, we will, too! Bring your appetite! All families are welcome to attend.

  30. Holiday Program

    Save the date! Lockhurst's annual Holiday Program is scheduled for Thursday, December 14th. This year's theme is "Peace Around the World." Kindergarten will perform last in both shows which are set for 8:30am and 1:00pm. The show will be approximately 1 hour. Please help your child learn the words to our two songs: "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Festivals of Light." The lyrics to these songs can be found under the Songs tab at the top of this page. We hope you enjoy the show! Arrive early to ensure a great seat!

  31. Holiday Boutique

    Get your shop on! Lockhurst PTO's annual Holiday Boutique will be open Tuesday, December 5th-Friday, December 8th. All students may do holiday shopping for their family and friends in the Library before school, at lunch, and after school. Volunteers are appreciated during these times to help the process go smoothly. There will also be a Parent Boutique Night on Monday, December 4th from 6-7:30pm.

  32. Thanksgiving Class Party

    Save the date! We will have a Thanksgiving class party on Friday, November 17th at 12:00pm, with dismissal to follow at 12:42. All parents are invited to attend. We will have a short presentation followed by a Thanksgiving inspired lunch. Stay tuned for details from our class room parents...

  33. I'm Going to College Week!

    Lockhurst will celebrate "I'm Going to College Week" during the week of November 6th - November 9th! Talk to your child about your own school experiences and the importance of graduating from high school and college! Students are encouraged to wear college gear throughout the week.

  35. Parent-Teacher Conferences

    Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held during the week of November 3-9. Conference is for adults only. Please arrange for childcare. Tuesday's dismissal will be at the usual time of 1:22. Dismissal on Friday 11/3, Monday 11/6, Wednesday 11/8, and Thursday 11/9 will be at 1:46. All students not picked up punctually will be sent to the office, so conferences may begin promptly at 1:50. There is no school on Friday, November 10th in honor of Veterans' Day. Please be on time for your conference and considerate of others by limiting your conference to the allotted time. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding. I look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your child's progress!   37. Kids Kreation Art Fundraiser

    Kids Kreations fundraiser is a wonderful way to turn your child's art into a keepsake! From stationery to cutting boards to travel mugs, you are sure to find the perfect, personalized gift for any family member or friend. Your child's Kids Kreation order form will be sent home on Friday, October 20th in his/her homework folder. The school is requesting that you return your paper order form on or by Friday, October 27th and complete online orders by Friday, November 3rd.



    Your child painted the blue water. Then, their hands were painted to create the fish and seaweed. Students drew the fishes' mouths and eyes. Enjoy!

  38. Halloween Parade and Class Party

    Our annual Halloween Parade will take place on Tuesday, October 31st. Your child may come to school dressed in costume. However, all students must bring a change of clothes to wear after the parade. No weapons, masks, or inappropriate materials may be brought to school. The parade will begin at 8:30am. Our class Halloween party will immediately follow the parade. Details to come from our class room parents.

  39. Fall Festival and Trunk-or-Treat

    Our PTO sponsored Fall Festival and Trunk-or-Treat will take place on Saturday, October 28th from 4:30-7:30pm. Come and experience safe and fun trick-or-treating and games with your Lockhurst pals! Families are encouraged to decorate a trunk, donate bags of candy, or create a class game.   40. 50th Day of School

    On Thursday, October 26th, we will celebrate our 50th day of school! Volunteers will be needed from 8-10:00am. Please bring a camera to take pictures for our Class Memory Book. Celebrate with us and dress like you are from the 1950s!

    During the week of October 23rd-October 27th, our school will pledge to be drug, alcohol, and tobacco free!

    Monday: Slam Dunk Drugs ~ Wear your favorite sports jersey!

    Tuesday: Wear red! ~ Respect your future! Be drug free!

    Wednesday: Shade Out Drugs ~ Wear your sunglasses!

    Thursday: Turn Your Back On Drugs ~ Wear your clothes backwards!

    Friday: Say Drug-Free Pledge at the Friday morning assembly.

    *Please note: Kindergarten will not participate in the Thursday theme, as we will be having our 50th Day of School Celebration. Please dress like you are from the 1950s on Thursday. Feel free to wear your clothes backwards on Friday!

  42. Pumpkin Patch Day

    Calling all volunteers... Please join us on Friday, October 13th to celebrate our second annual Kindergarten rotation, Pumpkin Patch Day! The kinder-kids will enjoy fun and educational math, science, and art activities related to pumpkins from 8:15-10:00am. Your child will be able to choose a pumpkin to take home from our "Pumpkin Patch." We will need volunteers during that time so we can divvy the kinder-kids into small groups to rotate through the stations. Please return your Volunteer Cut-off no later than Friday, October 6th. Bring a camera to take pictures for our Class Memory Book. Finally, please wear orange or clothes with pumpkins!

  43. September Awards

    Our award recipients for the month of September will be announced at the Friday Morning Assembly on Friday, October 6th at 8am. Super Scholar, Character, and Effort awards will be given to students from each T-K through 5th grade classroom. A note will be sent home in your child's homework envelope on Friday, September 29th, if your child will be receiving an award. We encourage the parents of award recipients to attend this assembly to acknowledge and congratulate their child's achievement! Congratulations to David, Kingston, and Simone!

  44. Walk To School Day

    You are cordially invited to join us for "Walk to School Day" on Wednesday, October 4th! We will all meet on the yard at 8:15am and leave through the gate by the school garden to walk the perimeter of the school. Students will need to have a signed permission slip in order to participate, and we would love for you to come, too!

  45. Picture Day!

    Say cheese! Fall Picture Day is scheduled for Friday, September 22nd. Please make sure to return your Picture Day order form in your child's homework envelope on Friday. Don't forget to wear your smile!

    Make-Up Picture Day is scheduled for Friday, November 3rd.

  46. Sensory Walk

    Volunteers are requested to join us for our annual Kindergarten Sensory Walk on Friday, September 8th from 8:00 a.m. until recess at 10:00! The kinder-kids will rotate through different stations to learn about our five senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. We’d love for you to join us so we can divide the children into small groups to rotate through the stations. Please email me at meg2265@lausd.net or return the Sensory Walk tear-off to our bin by Wednesday, September 6th if you would like to volunteer for this event. Extra forms can be found under Files. Please bring a camera to take pictures of all the fun, so I can be sure to include these great moments in our class memory book!

  47. Back to School Night

    **Save the date and time. Back to School Night will be held Tuesday, August 29th from 6:00-7:30pm. This is an important parent-teacher informational meeting to discuss the kindergarten curriculum your child will be learning this year and how we can work together to ensure your child is successful in mastering the grade level standards. Please arrange for childcare. Our program will begin at 6:00pm with an introduction of staff. There will be 2 classroom presentations from which you can choose to attend - approximately 6:15-6:45 or 7:00-7:30. I look forward to seeing you!

    If you would like to donate supplies for our classroom, we could use: white card stock, red printer paper, orange (not salmon) printer paper, green (not pastel) printer paper, blue (turquoise but not pastel) printer paper, purple (not pastel) printer paper, black ink for our current classroom printer (HP OfficeJet 932), colored ink for our current classroom printer (HP OfficeJet 933), thin white board markers, My First Ticonderoga #2 sharpened pencils, paper plates (thin, inexpensive ones to be used as book covers), Avery labels 2"x4"/10 labels per sheet, Avery labels 1"x2 5/8"/30 labels per sheet, Avery labels 1"x4"/20 labels per sheet, mini stickers for our sticker charts, prizes for our prize box, 25 paint palettes, and $5-$10 gift cards to Costco to print photographs of the students for our classroom posters and traveling books.

    We currently have enough: glue sticks, clear plastic sheet protectors (for our traveling books and math activities), white erasers, ivory printer paper, yellow printer paper (bold, not pastel), plants (vegetable, fruit, and flowers) for our class garden, Clorox or Kirkland (Costco) wipes for cleaning desks, baby wipes for cleaning kinder-hands, and Band-Aids. Thank you for our X-ACTO SchoolPro classroom electric pencil sharpener and classroom laminating machine and laminating pouches!
